The Udine International School
is a non-profit Foundation governed by a Board of Directors whose
main statutory objective is the promotion and advancement of international
culture and education.
The Udine International School, with English as a teaching language
open to students of both sexes and all nationalities, was started
in 2003 through a joint initiative with its founding partner, The
International School of Trieste, which is responsible for issuing
diplomas fully and legally recognized by Italian law (art. 10, comma
3, della Legge 29 gennaio 1986, n. 26).
UIS is a member of MAIS (Mediterranean Association of International
Schools) and, through its founding partner, is accredited by the Middle
States Association of International Schools and a member of ECIS (European
Council of International Schools).
The School is divided into three sections: Early Childhood (Pre-Nursery,
Nursery 3, Nursery 4 and Kindergarten) for students aged 2-6, Elementary
School (Grades 1 5) for students aged 5-11 and Junior High School
(Grades 6 8) for students aged 10-14.
The 2005-2006 school year had an enrollment of 180 students. The School
Calendar runs from September to June with Autumn, Christmas, Ski Week
and Easter breaks. Admissions are made throughout the year based on
age, student preparation and previous report cards.
Our Mission Statement is that of providing students from the international
and local communities with a learning environment which fosters the
values of education, honesty, cooperation and the understanding of
others, instilling a firm sense of international fellowship and an
open mind towards other cultures.
The Udine International School is located in the quiet greenery of
the Istituto Monsignor F. Tomadini compound, ideally situated on the
outskirts of Udine with convenient and easy access from the city centre
as well as from the nearby highway. The compound comprises an indoor
swimming pool, fully equipped gymnasium, soccer field, volleyball
and basketball courts.
The Early Childhood Center is housed in a brand new building with
colourful, spacious and cheerful classrooms, modern facilities and
a large garden surrounding the entire area. All lessons are taught
in English and admission does not require a previous knowledge of
the English language.
The Elementary and Junior High School programmes follow an international
curriculum designed to meet the demands of both a national and international
education. The Italian Language and Cultural Studies strictly follow
those outlined by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities
and Research. The Elementary School curriculum is divided into Core
Subjects (Language Arts & Spelling, Reading, Mathematics, Science,
Social Studies, Italian Language & Italian Cultural Studies) which
have more hours of instruction and Additional Subjects (Art, Music,
Physical Education, Handwriting & Computer Studies) with one or
two lessons weekly. In the Junior High School curriculum Core Subjects
include Language Arts, Literature, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science,
Italian & a third language (students can choose from French or
German), while Additional Subjects include Art, Physical Education,
Computer Studies and Latin (beginning in Grade 7).
Students have access to a state-of-the-art computer lab with a large
assortment of software and monitored Internet access. The academic
programme is enhanced by a wide range of extracurricular activities
including art, music, drama and numerous field trips within Italy
and abroad.
English as an Additional Language courses are offered during school
hours to those students whose degree of fluency in English is not
sufficient to enable them to fully participate in the school curriculum.
UIS teachers are all highly-qualified native speakers and possess
university or specialised degrees from various anglo-saxon countries
(i.e. U.K., Canada, U.S., Australia, etc.) which meet the requirements
necessary to teach in international schools.
UIS organises a five week (end of June to end of July) Summer Camp
which includes swimming lessons, outdoor sports activities, arts and
crafts, school work aid and supervision and English language lessons
for children attending local schools.
